Supported by acclaimed Architects Astudio, PRD was commissioned to develop an Action Plan, which would assist London Borough of Sutton to secure the long-term viability of Sutton town centre as the heart of civic life in the borough.
This innovative project was commissioned to re-energise the existing strategy for the town centre, which had lost momentum as the economic downturn had made the major spatial strategy for the area undeliverable.
Following a thorough analysis of the centre’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats and a review of policy, baseline data and best practices; a portfolio of short, medium and long-term interventions of varying levels of complexity, cost and risk was developed by PRD together with LB Sutton and key local stakeholders.
The revised strategy promotes an innovative, community-driven focus, with public realm, meanwhile uses and public arts being key conduits to re-position the high street at the heat of civic life. It also proposes a proactive approach that empowers the Council to take control of regeneration and development in the town centre.
"PRD stood out for their enthusiastic and innovative approach to the project, and their understanding of the sensitivities and challenges of local governance. PRD demonstrated a detailed knowledge of the issues facing Town Centres and developed a huge range of pragmatic, strategic interventions for the Council and its partners to pursue that will contribute towards safeguarding the future prosperity of the High Street and the Town Centre".
